Lost goes quantum & temporal superposition states

My favorite television show is Lost.  I’ve been obsessed with it for awhile and now, as if they needed to reel me in even more, they introduced a quantum consciousness sort of time travel storyline that hints at some of the things I’ve been discussing hereherehere, and here, as well as what’s been discussed over at The Observer Effect. It raises the question of whether or not superposition states consisting of two different times might possible exist and might this help explain seemingly inexplicable cases of déjà vu.  While it is a radical notion for certain and I’m a serious skeptic of the paranormal, there is some precedent that, at least on the quantum level, this might be possible.  In particular, the Leggett-Garg inequalities are Bell-like inequalities that provide correlations for time-separated events.  In related work, I recently showed that the Cerf-Adami inequalities are a form of the second law of thermodynamics.  Thus, as Ken Wharton agreed, it seems quantum mechanics violates the macroscopic form of the second law of thermodynamics.  In short, while the universe appears time asymmetric on a macroscopic scale, it really is time symmetric, at least microscopically.

  1. Wow, I didn’t believe I would actually find an article about this when I searched for it. I suck at math and by no means am a physicist, but I have a vivid imagination with enough understanding of the subject to at least visualize what’s being explained.

It crossed my mind that if Schrodingers cat could exist in superposition wouldn’t it be a safe assumption that time itself exist in superposition and that it collapses to one state because we observe it. After all if it exist; wouldn’t a unified theory of everything almost require this?

Then I wondered if it were possible to put a Temporal Kitty in Schrodinger’s box. What would be the ramifications of such a thing. We are learning how to harness particle superposition for exploitations like Quantum Computers. What would we be able to do with Temporal Superposition?

I take a lot of things from dreams. I don’t read into their meanings much, but I do find the events of them fascinating because they are always a mix of the impossible and possible. Better than anything Hollywood has come up with. This whole train of though was based on a dream. I dream’t that a scientist told me that dreams are just failed realities that manifest themselves on the edge of consciousness because at some point before the events in a dream you made a decision contrary to what would be required to make the dream a reality.

Now I’m not crazy and the dreams being failed realities is a pretty big stretch. I highly doubt that the classic stuck in goo while trying to run from hideous monster is really a possible reality but it got me thinking about it and Temporal Kitties came to mind.

Well I’ve written this down somewhere at least. 🙂
